DETAILS
This is the interior retrofit project of a Japanese food restaurant in Santa Ana, California as a result of deterioration of the building. We renewed the design through interior changes, creating a more relaxed and comfortable dining atmosphere.
CHALLENGES
Design
The restaurant’s name “Sankai” refers to Mountain and Sea in Japanese.
In designing the new interior space of this restaurant, we always embraced the concept of representing both a mountainous scene and ocean scene in the restaurant space; the dining area was designed to be the mountainous space while the hallway leading to the inside of the restaurant was designed to be the oceanic space.
The concept was immersed in color and the carpentry finish of the restaurant.
In order to fill the shop space with the “Japanese atmosphere” that the Owner intended, we allowed the interior space to have plaster finish walls, shelves made of old materials, green bamboo objects, etc. The final results brought satisfaction.
