DETAILS

This project built facilities for Kojima America Corporation so that they could offer high quality products quickly, consistently and on time to the association of Japanese household appliance manufacturers.
We built the first press machine manufacturing and warehouse facility a second plant later in San Diego’s Otay Mesa area.

CHALLENGES

1. Construction Accuracy
We established three production lines. One product line contains eight 60-ton press machines, which has a pressurization capacity of three tons and associated washing devices.
We negotiated with the landlord, demolished a pre-existing concrete slab, dug five feet under the slab, then poured 180 feet of new foundation. Normal pitch difference can be 3 mm (1/8”); however, we managed to make a pitch difference of base plates within +-0.8 mm (3/100”) for 180 feet to fulfil the client’s demand.

2. Managing Schedule
The client had his own business scheme and set a rigid operation starting date based on their contract with the association. Therefore, we prepared all the authorization applications and inspections very carefully in order to minimize the delay and complete the project on time.
We managed to start operation on the day that the client planned originally.

3. Coordination between Japan and U.S.A.
We visited Japan to examine how to set up the special press machine and transportation robot.
After the machines were delivered in the United States, we kept in contact with Japanese and local engineers to ensure smooth operations. It was the first operation in the United States for the client, so we held a lecture in Japanese on U.S. safety regulation and on-site guidance to prepare for the operation. We have worked on the overall construction managing, helped the client to negotiate and coordinate with the local developers, and various engineering. We were responsible for the importing and transportation of heavy-duty machineries, setting up all the machines, and obtaining various authorizations (including UL certificate).
